Job Title: Executive Director

Organization: ABODE Contemplative Care for the Dying

Location: On-site at our residence San Antonio, TX

Reports to: Board of Directors

Position Overview

The Executive Director serves as both the primary organizational leader and a steward of ABODE’s contemplative mission. This role calls for a grounded, thoughtful presence—someone able to balance the necessities of administration with the deeper work of nurturing a culture of compassion, calm, and mindful care. Working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director guides the strategic direction of the organization while supporting the staff, volunteers, and community members who carry our mission forward. Key responsibilities include board engagement, program oversight, fundraising, organizational culture, and community relationships.


Key Responsibilities

Board Engagement and Governance:

  • Serve as the principal bridge between the Board of Directors and daily operations, fostering clarity, trust, and shared purpose.
  • Support intentional strategic planning and sound policy development.
  • Ensure open, timely communication with the Board regarding operations, finances, and long-term vision.
  • Prepare materials for Board meetings and participate fully, contributing to thoughtful board development and recruitment.

Organizational Leadership and Management:

  • Lead, guide, and support a high-performing team grounded in ABODE’s values.
  • Establish a thoughtful division of responsibilities across the organization.
  • Foster an inclusive, grounded culture that encourages reflection, belonging, and steady engagement from both staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are implemented in alignment with ethical, legal, and mission-centered standards.

Employee and Volunteer Support:

  • Oversee hiring, onboarding, and ongoing formation of staff.
  • Sustain a vibrant volunteer program that honors their contribution and deepens their connection to the mission.
  • Provide regular, compassionate performance feedback and opportunities for growth.

Financial Sterwardship:

  • Oversee the financial health of the organization through long- and short-term planning, budget management, and responsible controls.
  • Ensure timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the Board.
  • Work closely with the Finance Committee to maintain financial integrity and transparency.

Fundraising and Revenue Development:

  • Develop and implement a thoughtful, mission-aligned fundraising plan.
  • Cultivate meaningful relationships with donors, foundations, sponsors, and supporters.
  • Oversee fundraising events, grant writing, and revenue-generating initiatives.
  • Guide a clear and authentic marketing and communications strategy.

Community Relations and Partnerships:

  • Serve as the organization’s primary spokesperson, conveying ABODE’s mission with mindfulness and clarity.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners, agencies, and nonprofits to extend our reach and impact.
  • Represent the organization at community gatherings, events, and conferences.

Program Development and Oversight:

  • Ensure program design aligns with strategic goals and the heart of ABODE’s contemplative work.
  • Oversee program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Ensure services meet community needs with integrity, depth, and compassion.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Ensure adherence to all laws, regulations, and internal standards.
  • Guide the organization’s risk management efforts to protect our people, property, and reputation.
  • Develop and maintain crisis management plans.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 7–10 years of senior nonprofit leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success in board engagement, financial management, fundraising, and community relations.
  • Strong organizational and planning abilities, including delegation and program development.
  • Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, technological, and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to support and collaborate with staff and volunteers.

Compensation:

  • Salary commensurate with experience. Proposed range: $90,000 – $95,000.
  • Benefits include a comprehensive insurance package and generous paid time off.
