ABODE Contemplative Care for the Dying is pleased to announce the strategic promotion of Mary Thorsby to Chief Executive Officer to further support the organization’s growth and scaling of services.
“ABODE exists to serve people at end of life and transform perspectives around death and dying,” says Beverly Tuomala RN with Trinity Hospice and President of ABODE’s Board of Directors. “With Mary’s leadership, we’ve more than doubled our amount of donations and, more importantly, the people we’ve served since she joined us four years ago.”
ABODE is the only home in San Antonio and one three in the state that cares for terminally ill guests at no charge, serving hundreds of people in the past decade. Mary’s efforts have made ABODE one of the fastest-growing nonprofits in Bexar County and helped position San Antonio as a leader in the end-of-life care field.
“Since leading ABODE, I’ve learned that we can change people’s lives even at the very end of their lives,” Thorsby says. “We experience so many beautiful stories of reconnection and healing, and we create an intentional environment where families can focus solely on the love they have for one another while we provide the rest of the care. For those who have no family we become their family. No one dies alone at ABODE.”
ABODE’s innovative educational programs include ABODE Academy, Death Cafe, and the only End of Life Doula Certification program featuring hands-on experience with the dying. Other contemplative programs include bedside yoga, sound healing, cranial sacral therapy and various meditation, caregiver, and grief support groups.
Mary asks that the ABODE community help her celebrate by making a donation and becoming a closer part of our community. If you haven’t met her yet, please email email@example.com – she’d love to chat with you!
